FAQ

Mini-split installation questions

Mini-splits suit homes without ductwork, additions, garages, finished basements, attics, home offices and rooms that need their own temperature. They heat and cool, install with minimal construction and let you control each zone separately. We assess your space during a free visit and recommend the right layout for it.

It depends on the outdoor unit. A single-zone system runs one indoor unit, while multi-zone systems support several indoor units for different rooms. For example, we installed a Cooper&Hunter 28,000 BTU outdoor unit with three 9,000 BTU indoor units in New Britain, CT. We size each zone during the estimate.

Yes. Modern heat pump mini-splits provide reliable heating even during cold New England winters. Cold-climate models such as Mitsubishi Hyper Heat keep heating well below freezing. We mount the outdoor unit on a stand above the snow line and set the system up for both heating and cooling.

We place indoor units high on a wall where the air reaches the whole room and the line set has a short, neat path. The outdoor unit goes on a raised stand or wall bracket with clearance for airflow and snow. We plan the placement with you before the installation starts.

With proper installation and regular maintenance, most mini-split systems last 12 to 15 years or longer. Clean filters, a clear outdoor unit and a professional tune-up once a year, or twice if the system runs year-round, keep it efficient and help it reach the longer end of that range.

Yes, in most homes. Mini-splits are highly energy-efficient because they eliminate duct losses and cool or heat only the spaces you use. Each zone has its own control, so empty rooms do not use energy, and inverter compressors adjust their speed instead of switching on and off.
